Furneaux Freight intends to cease servicing the island on the 28th September.
Flinders Council and the State Government are extremely aware of the important of sea freight services for all sectors of the Flinders community. Flinders Council is now liaising closely with the government to have a contingency service in place for when operations cease in order to support our short term needs.
Carol Cox, Mayor of Flinders Island has spoken directly to Rene Hidding, State Infrastructure Minister, who is concerned about the potential for this to affect the Islands’ people and economy and is closely monitoring the situation. The Minister has said he is strongly committed to “establishing a sustainable, safe and efficient shipping service for Flinders Island.”
Flinders Council will keep all Flinders Islanders informed as further information comes to hand in the coming weeks.
